Charles J Graty
I have been working as a counsellor for about 30 years. Originally trained in London, worked in Africa then immigrated to NZ about 16 years ago giving me international experience allowing me to work cross culturally.
I have special interests in working with couples, including sexual functioning/difficulties. I use leading research based counselling methods that have proved to be highly effective in resolving conflict in couple relationships. One of the methods used is Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), which focuses on addressing the underlying/unresolved emotions that drive problematic behaviour in a safe non-threatening environment. I also do sexual abuse work (non ACC). Another expertise is working with anger management, facilitating violence courses and one on one specialist counselling for men.
Other areas I excel in include depression, self-esteem, anxiety, grief, loss, trauma, dream interpretation and spirituality. I am passionate about working within different cultures and various backgrounds and receive regular bi-cultural supervision to ensure my work is bi-culturally sensitive and respectful.
I work in a relational way with clients. I believe that if counselling is to be effective it is essential that clients get a strong sense of the “right fit” with their therapist. I tailor my style and counselling method to what seems to fit for each individual, this can involve being goal focused or just getting alongside people for support, the approach will be determined following the initial assessment.
